Negotiations between Barcelona and Athletico Paranaense for the transfer of young striker Vitor Roque are progressing positively, according to sources familiar with the matter. Barça, in search of a back-up striker for Robert Lewandowski, turned their attention to Roque, with newly appointed sporting director Deco leading the discussions. At just 18 years of age, Roque is considered the club’s best option, as he not only supports Lewandowski, but also has the potential to succeed the 35-year-old Polish player.
Recent reports from Spain indicate that Barcelona have reached a possible agreement with Athletico Paranaense, valued at 45 million euros, including add-ons. Although sources close to the negotiations have not confirmed the terms of the deal, they express optimism that an agreement will be finalized during the summer transfer window.
However, reaching an agreement with Athletico is only one aspect of the process, as reports indicate that Barcelona also need to create wage space and openings in the squad before committing to new signings. Due to La Liga’s financial restrictions, the Catalan club can only allocate 40% of any transfer revenue or capital saved as a result of departures to the acquisition of new players. Consequently, they must first free up sufficient wage space or generate transfer fees from departing squad members before registering new signings.
Barcelona’s financial constraints played a major role in Lionel Messi’s decision to join Inter Miami, despite coach Xavi Hernandez expressing his desire to sign the Argentine star. Messi acknowledged that he couldn’t wait for Barcelona to solve its financial problems. Sources reveal that Barcelona are also considering getting rid of some of their attacking options before securing another striker, as Lewandowski, Ousmane Dembele, Raphinha, Ansu Fati and Ferran Torres are currently competing for two positions following Xavi’s move to a four-man midfield.
Vitor Roque, who has already played for Brazil’s senior team, is considered one of South America’s most promising young talents. Starting his career in the youth ranks of América Mineiro, Roque moved to Cruzeiro in 2021, before joining Athletico Paranaense the following year in a transfer worth around 4.5 million euros. He has made over 50 appearances for the Brazilian Serie A side, contributing 16 goals and playing a key role in the team’s journey to the Copa Libertadores final last year and victory in this year’s Campeonato Paranaense.
