The long-awaited 2023 NBA draft will take place in less than three weeks, and all indicators point to Victor Wembanyama being picked first, by the San Antonio Spurs. Unlike previous draws, this conclusion seems to have no suspense. Ever since the famous LeBron James made his debut in 2003, the French power forward has been heralded as one of the most promising prospects to make it in the NBA.
Although Wembanyama’s future team is set, there has been speculation about his participation in the NBA Summer League. Traditionally, the league prefers the top picks to make their debuts in Las Vegas, which has become the epicenter of the Summer League since its inception in 2004. This year, however, the inaugural Summer League event will be held in Sacramento in July, just before the action travels to southern Nevada.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver said the league would have no problem with Wembanyama making his debut in the California capital. Despite the fact that Las Vegas offers superior public relations prospects and boosts Wembanyama’s worldwide image, league executives are keeping their choices under wraps.
The San Antonio Spurs have made no decision on Wembanyama’s participation in the Summer League. That’s understandable, since they can’t comment on him until the 6-foot-4 big man is officially selected as the No. 1 pick on June 22 in New York City.
Meanwhile, the NBA is preparing for a major presence in Las Vegas. Wembanyama has already been confirmed as a participant in the first NBA Con, a basketball conference held in Southern Nevada during the Summer League at the beginning of July. This strengthens Las Vegas’ position as an important venue for NBA events and exhibitions.
Victor Wembanyama will begin his professional basketball career as the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft.
