With this result, Grêmio climbed to third place in the standings with 17 points, while São Paulo dropped to seventh place with 15 points. This was São Paulo’s second consecutive defeat under Dorival Júnior.
The game showed countless opportunities for the “lei do ex” to shine, and it was Reinaldo who made the decisive impact. Despite São Paulo’s best efforts to recover, Grêmio held on for a fourth consecutive home win.
Fluminense beat Red Bull Bragantino
Fluminense ended Red Bull Bragantino’s impressive run of five consecutive wins with a 2-1 victory at the Maracanã in the 9th round of the Brazilian Championship.
Despite a challenging start, Fluminense gradually found their rhythm and took the lead through Ganso, who converted a well-executed counter-attack. The goals came in the first half, with Ganso breaking his goal drought in the 27th minute to give Fluminense the lead. The team continued to dominate, and Felipe Melo extended the lead with an accurate finish. In the 34th minute, Felipe himself doubled the lead, taking advantage of a rebound.
Red Bull Bragantino reacted in the second half, with Thiago Borbas scoring in the 54th minute to inject tension into the match. However, Fluminense maintained control and created dangerous counter-attacking opportunities. Lelê missed a golden chance to seal the win, ensuring a thrilling finish. Fluminense’s victory moved them up to fifth place in the table with 16 points, setting up a promising position for the upcoming games.
Palmeiras beat Coritiba 3-1
Palmeiras showed their dominance by securing a comfortable 3-1 win against Coritiba at Allianz Parque in the ninth round of the Brasileirão. Artur and Rony were the heroes for Verdão, with Rony scoring twice.
Palmeiras wasted no time in taking control of the match, and Artur scored in the 30th minute with a well-executed move. Shortly afterwards, Mayke’s cross was met by a header from Rony, extending the home side’s lead in the 34th minute. Despite a few scares towards the end, including Zé Roberto’s goal, Palmeiras held firm.
In the second half, Gabriel Menino’s injury led to his substitution, but this didn’t dampen Palmeiras’ spirits, as they continued to create chances. Dudu came close to scoring his first goal at Allianz Parque this year, but had a shot disallowed for offside. However, Rony completed his brace after receiving an assist from Dudu in the 73rd minute, further solidifying Palmeiras’ dominance. In a peculiar twist, Coritiba managed to score a consolation goal, as a miscommunication between Weverton and Luan allowed Alef Manga to capitalize in the 83rd minute.
The win moved Palmeiras back into second place in the standings, narrowing the gap to leaders Botafogo to just two points. On the other hand, Coritiba struggled to find their feet and remain bottom of the table with just three points and no wins.
Cuiabá secure vital 1-0 away win against Goiás
In a crucial clash at the bottom of the table, Cuiabá emerged victorious with a 1-0 win over Goiás on Sunday. Striker Deyverson proved to be Dourado’s hero when he scored the decisive goal in the second half to lift his team out of the relegation zone.
Playing with a defensive mentality, Cuiabá concentrated on exploiting spaces and relying on a heroic performance from goalkeeper Tadeu to keep the hosts at bay. Tadeu made several crucial saves to prevent Goiás from reaching the back of the net. Although Goiás had their chances, including shots from Palacios and Maguinho, they failed to open the scoring.
At the start of the second half, Cuiabá opened the scoring in the 54th minute when defender Alan Empereur gave a sublime pass to Deyverson, who finished calmly for Tadeu. Goiás struggled to react, finding it difficult to pass and failing to break through Cuiabá’s defense. The match in Goiânia ended with Cuiabá holding on to a slender lead until the final whistle, securing three vital points away from home.
With the win, António Oliveira’s side moved up to 11th place with 14 points, while Goiás are now in 17th place with seven points.
