Celtic, the giants of Scottish soccer, won another treble, their fifth in seven seasons, beating second division Inverness Caledonian Thistle to win the Scottish Cup. The win completed a three-peat in the title race and, perhaps, the permanence of coach Ange Postecoglou at the club, with reports that he is the favorite to take over as manager of Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur. The coach didn’t talk about his plans for the future, but congratulated the players and expressed his gratitude to the fans at the end of another successful season.
Celtic took the lead just after the half-hour mark when Kyogo Furahashi scored his 34th goal of the season. Postecoglou’s side were expected to bury their opponents with an avalanche of goals, but they couldn’t find the back of the net as easily as they usually do. Even so, they managed to double their lead in the second half after Liel Abada finished off a clever Celtic move, before Caledonian halved the deficit. The underdogs’ goal didn’t bother Celtic too much, who scored their third goal in injury time to lift the Scottish Cup.
Postecoglou joined Celtic in 2021, when he managed to save the team’s season at a time when they were 25 points behind Rangers, leading them to back-to-back titles. After this great achievement, he has now led them to a triple title, all in the space of two years. The Australian coach, whose link with Tottenham saddened Celtic fans, was honored by the spectators. The fans in the stadium chanted to convince Postecoglou to change his mind, further increasing his popularity among the fans.
“I’m very proud of it. It was an extraordinary season for the boys. We took people by surprise last year. It’s always difficult to defend things. The challenge was: ‘can we be better this year and move forward? We’ve won the trophy that we missed out on last year, so it feels great, it’s the last day of the season. It’s a special occasion and it was nice to end on that note.” said Postecoglou.
