Former Tennessee Volunteer basketball player Julian Phillips has opted to remain in the 2023 NBA draft, going against predictions and forgoing the opportunity to transfer to another college club. The statement came on the “decision day” of college basketball and the NBA draft, as many have labeled it.
Phillips, who had put his name on the transfer portal, ended up deciding to pursue a career in the NBA. The skilled athlete thrived in the Tennessee Volunteers’ system during his time with the team. Phillips’ length, quickness and aggressiveness were evident both on the perimeter and in the post. His defensive skills earned him respect not only as one of the best defenders on his university team, but also as one of the best defenders in college.
While Phillips is expected to excel as a defender in the NBA and secure a spot in a team’s rotation, there is speculation that his potential could have reached even greater heights had he returned to college and transferred to another program.
At 6’4″ and with remarkable length, Phillips had the opportunity to further showcase his offensive skills as a slasher, significantly increasing his draft stock for the following year. With the incoming freshman class widely regarded as one of the weakest in recent history, Phillips would have been highly sought after as an experienced player, potentially raising his recruiting prospects.
Although Tennessee was no longer an option for Phillips, the prospect of entering the transfer window and finding a program that would pay NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) compensation, which stands for name, image, and significant likeness, and a coach he could trust for his growth seemed perfect. Phillips’ age and star status alone would make him an attractive transfer target.
It’s not yet known where Phillips will be picked in the draw, although he could go as early as the second round. His skills and experience make him a valuable asset who can have an immediate effect on any team that joins him. Phillips’ selection marks the third consecutive year that the Tennessee Volunteers have produced a unique player, demonstrating the program’s ability to recruit elite players and prepare them for the professional ranks.
