Liverpool veteran and Premier League legend Mohamed Salah has issued a statement expressing his utter disappointment at Liverpool’s disappointing campaign this season, as Manchester United’s win over Chelsea confirmed the fact that Liverpool will not be participating in the Champions League next season.
Manchester United thrashed Chelsea 4-1 to add to the Londoners’ woes
with Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford getting their names on the scoresheet.
Jurgen Klopp’s side had drawn with Aston Villa, which meant that Manchester’s results would determine their fate. Liverpool were hoping for two defeats to give United any chance of taking part in Europe’s most coveted cup competition next season, but their hopes were dashed by a clinical performance from Erik Ten Hag’s men, who left no stone unturned to dominate Chelsea.
The striker made a statement on his various social networks, saying that his team had failed the fans and that, at a club of Liverpool’s size, qualifying for the competition was the “bare minimum”. He called the team’s performance “inexcusable” and added that he wouldn’t want to soften the fact that Liverpool haven’t been good.
“I’m totally devastated. There is absolutely no excuse for this. We had everything we needed to reach the Champions League next year and we didn’t make it. We’re Liverpool and qualifying for the competition is the bare minimum. I’m sorry, but it’s too early for an encouraging or optimistic post. We’ve let you and ourselves down“. Salah said.
Individually, however, Salah had an excellent campaign. The Egyptian contributed 30 goals in the league, with 19 goals and 11 assists in a Liverpool side that was well below its best. To put things into perspective, only Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe have more goals than Salah, who is on a par with Lionel Messi. However, Salah’s brilliance didn’t spark the team into action, meaning his performances were largely in vain. Klopp will try to make some important signings during the summer and ensure that his team performs more impressively next season.
