According to recent sources, Corinthians Basquete is currently in negotiations with a new coach as it prepares for the upcoming Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB) season. The team from the current NBB season, which was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, is trying to start over under new management. Léo Figueiró, who will not be renewing his contract with Corinthians, will be replaced by Silvio Santander, a well-known Argentine coach with a distinguished career.
Guilherme Tadeu, a journalist on the Café Belgrado podcast, broke the news of the possible change of coach. Santander brings a wealth of experience to the table and has already won two championships in the Argentine National League with Quimsa and San Lorenzo. He also helped coach Argentina’s national team, which finished second at the 2019 World Cup in China. Santander also worked as an assistant coach for China’s national basketball team the previous year, as well as coaching Venezuela’s Guaiqueres de Margarita.
Daniel Onwenu’s contract was extended by Corinthians for another year earlier this month. The club has a policy of giving its court sports players annual contracts, which correspond to the length of the individual season. Basketball contracts usually last from July to July.
The current NBB season, which is in its final round of playoffs, is due to end in June. Corinthians Basketball has shown its determination and competitiveness this season by reaching the quarter-finals of the Campeonato Paulista, as well as its participation in the national league.
