Brazilian midfielder Arthur Melo, who was on loan at Liverpool, is set to return to his parent club Juventus at the end of the season. Although the 26-year-old’s contract included an option to buy, the Premier League giants will not activate it after Arthur became a forgotten figure during his time at Anfield.
Having made just one competitive appearance for Liverpool since joining from Anfield in 2022, the team could hardly recoup the 4.5 million euro loan fee he paid to his parent club. Juventus will also have to find new buyers for the Brazilian midfielder after Klopp’s side decided not to exercise their 37.5 million euro offer to sign him on a permanent basis.
After making his debut for the club during the 4-1 defeat to Napoli in the Champions League, he faced a number of problems, including injury problems, which forced the central midfielder to even feature for Liverpool’s under-21 team.
Despite the unceremonious end to the wedding, Klopp wished Arthur good luck and praised his “professionalism”.
“I would like to wish Arthur Melo all the best in his next stage. Due to different circumstances, he wasn’t able to play as much as we would have liked, but his professionalism and working attitude were remarkable“, said Klopp at a press conference.
Having initially made a name for himself at Grêmio, Arthur was signed by Barcelona in 2018, who decided to use him in a swap deal to get Miralem Pjanic. The move didn’t work out for both parties and, after failing to establish himself as a first-team regular in Serie A, the Brazilian was transferred to Liverpool.
After his tumultuous time in England, the midfielder will probably struggle to find suitors in Europe, while a move back to Brazil could be on the cards. With Juventus’ finances in great turmoil, the Serie A club is likely to cut its losses on the player who has not failed to fulfill his initial promise.
On the other hand, Liverpool are expected to make a big bet on signing new midfielders, with Argentine World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister being strongly linked with Anfield.
