In a historic move, Formula 1 is preparing to produce television coverage of the much-anticipated Monaco Grand Prix, breaking with the long-standing tradition of local broadcasters exclusively covering the event. This groundbreaking decision means a significant change in the control of the broadcasting process, as Formula 1 will be in charge of the worldwide broadcast of all the remaining races in the 2023 season.
For years, Formula 1 has been responsible for overseeing the global broadcast of all the races on the calendar, with the exception of Monaco in recent times. However, due to the unfortunate cancellation of the Imola Grand Prix following severe flooding in the Emilia Romagna region, the 2023 season now consists of 22 races instead of the initially planned 23. As a result, Formula 1 seized the opportunity to take full control over the production and broadcasting of all races, including the iconic Monaco Grand Prix.
Traditionally, the esteemed Monaco Grand Prix was produced exclusively by the local TV station, Tele Monte Carlo. However, Formula 1 is ready to revolutionize the coverage of this prestigious event by now taking responsibility for the broadcast, including worldwide transmission. This decision is a response to the criticism suffered by local presenters in recent years, when crucial moments and inopportune takes were missed, damaging the viewer’s experience.
For example, renowned national networks such as ITV, RTL and Rai have been awarded the rights to broadcast the British, German and Italian legs of the Formula 1 calendar. These broadcasters generally prioritized their respective national pilots, offering them preferential treatment and greater attention during coverage.
Remarkably, Monaco has retained its distinction as the only locally produced race on the calendar for the last 11 years. This unique situation arose after Fuji Television discontinued production of the Japanese Grand Prix in 2011. Prior to this change, Formula 1 had gradually taken control of the production of Grand Prix events around the world, gradually eliminating the dependence on local presenters.
With the decision to bring production in-house, Formula 1 aims to raise the quality of its coverage of the Monaco Grand Prix. By introducing innovative camera angles and preserving the traditional shots that capture the essence of the iconic circuit, Formula 1 strives to offer a more immersive and captivating viewing experience for fans around the world.
As Formula 1 takes greater control over the broadcasting process, this historic transition signifies a new era in the production of Grand Prix events. The Monaco Grand Prix, known for its glamour and excitement, will now receive a new approach to its coverage, presenting the race in a manner befitting its legendary status.
