According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Miami Heat, after a great performance in the post-season, are eyeing the signing of excellent point guard Kyrie Irving. As the NBA playoffs come to an end and free agency approaches, clubs across the league are looking for ways to improve their teams for next season.
During the playoffs, it became clear that the Miami Heat needed another star to complement Jimmy-Butler and Bam-Adebayo. Exhaustion proved to be a problem when they progressed from the play-off round to eighth place. A deep run in the playoffs is a difficult task that requires the right combination of talent, chemistry and stamina.
The Heat have several alternatives this summer, with Gabe-Vincent, Caleb-Martin, Kevin-Love and Max-Strus becoming free agents. However, there are rumors that if the Dallas-Mavericks want Kyrie-Irving again, they may require more than simply the aforementioned players to consider an offer.
Shams Charania recently mentioned on Fan-Duel-TV that Miami could consider young prospect Tyler-Herro in a possible trade package along with other assets. Whatever path they choose, it’s clear that the Heat’s current roster isn’t capable of sustained success in the postseason.
Despite recent scandals on and off the court, Kyrie Irving remains an attractive target for free agents due to his high scoring ability. During the 2022-23 season, Irving averaged 27.0 points per game, while shooting 51.0% from the field and 39.2% from beyond the arc. He also averaged 6.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game.
Irving’s NBA career began in his first year at Duke University, when he averaged 17.5 points and 5.4 assists per game. His excellent performance earned him a spot on the All-ACC freshman team and put him in contention for the coveted Bob Cousy Award, which is given to the best point guard in the country. Irving applied for the 2011 NBA draft after his freshman season.
The Cleveland Cavaliers chose Irving as the first overall pick in that draft, and he quickly established himself as one of the best point guards in the league. Irving was named to the NBA first team after averaging 18.5 points and 5.4 assists per game in his first season.
The Miami-Heat will be chasing Kyrie Irving throughout the offseason, wanting to add his scoring and playmaking skills to their roster.
