Flamengo, the renowned Brazilian soccer club, is eyeing the signing of talented 19-year-old defender Sebastián Boselli from Defensor Sporting in Uruguay. Boselli, who played a crucial role in Uruguay’s victorious campaign at the U-20 World Cup, has caught the eye of Flamengo. Although the club faces strong competition in negotiations for the promising young talent, it believes that Boselli’s quality can make him a quick addition to the professional team.
The possible signing of Boselli would be seen as a long-term investment by Flamengo, since he can still play at U-20 level. However, his impressive skills suggest that he could quickly adapt to the demands of the first team. No contact has been made between Flamengo’s representatives and Defensor Sporting.
Boselli, a right-footed defender, perfectly fits the profile Flamengo are looking for to strengthen their defensive options, especially in light of Rodrigo Caio’s early departure. The club’s scouting department holds the Uruguayan in high regard, especially after his excellent performances at the U-20 World Cup.
It’s worth noting that Flamengo continue to prioritize Lucas Veríssimo as their main target for defensive reinforcement. Veríssimo, a defender from Benfica, is seen as a more immediate solution and a candidate for a starting berth at Flamengo. Meanwhile, Samir remains under surveillance, but seems to be a distant prospect for the Rubro-Negro.
If Flamengo decide to make an official offer, they will face stiff competition. River Plate have also expressed an interest in Boselli, while European clubs are closely monitoring his progress. Defensor Sporting have set a transfer fee of 2.5 million euros (approximately R$12.5 million) for 80% of Boselli’s economic rights.
Boselli joined Defensor Sporting’s first team in 2022, but it was this year that he began to get more opportunities, making ten appearances. He showed his versatility by playing as a right and left-back, as well as a defensive midfielder. Boselli’s outstanding attributes include excellent anticipation when marking, precise passing and the ability to distribute the ball.
During the U-20 World Cup held in Argentina between May and June, Boselli stood out as the leading tackler for La Celeste and came third overall among all players, with an impressive 21 tackles during the tournament. Together with his defensive partner Matturro, he formed one of the competition’s standout duos, conceding just three goals, none of them in the knockout phase.
