The Brazilian U16 Women’s Basketball Team has embarked for the U16 Women’s Copa América, which will be held in Yucatán, Mexico, from June 13 to 19, 2023. The promising team, led by coach Dyego Maranini Cavalcanti, with Adriana Moisés Pinto Mafra and Luciana Thomazini de Araujo as assistant coaches, will make their debut against Canada on June 13, with a live broadcast on CBB TV on YouTube.
Brazil’s U16 team has a rich history of success in FIBA events, with notable achievements including first place in the 2014 South American U15 Women’s Championship and second place in the 2015 FIBA Americas U16 Women’s Championship. Her most recent placement was in the 2021 FIBA U16 Women’s Americas Championship, where she finished 5-6.
The team’s roster is impressive, with promising talents such as Nicolly Eloizi Sanches da Silva and Micaela Duarte Cavalcanti, both of whom have made significant contributions in previous competitions. Silva, born on September 1, 2007 and standing at 166 cm (5’5″), averaged 3.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists in her last event. Cavalcanti, born on April 5, 2008 and also 164 cm tall, had an impressive performance in her last event, with averages of 11.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 6.2 assists.
The U-16 Women’s Copa América will follow a group stage format with three matches for qualification, leading to the quarter-finals which pit teams from different groups against each other. The top four will advance to the semi-finals, with the winners moving on to the final round. This prestigious tournament serves as a qualifier for the U-17 World Cup in 2024, making it an important event for the participating teams.
The Brazilian team is ready to demonstrate its prowess and make its mark on the international stage. With a combination of experienced coaches and young talent, the aim is to secure a place at the U-17 World Cup and continue Brazil’s rich tradition of success in women’s basketball.
