Liverpool finally completed their first signing of the summer transfer window as the Premier League heavyweights sealed the transfer of Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton in a £35 million deal.
The Reds have long been linked with the World Cup-winning Argentine midfielder and he was finally unveiled as Liverpool’s new number 10 on Thursday. Mac Allister played a key role at Brighton, helping them finish sixth in the Premier League last season, when they qualified for Europe for the first time in the club’s history.
The playmaker, whose eventual fee could reach £55 million with add-ons, played 112 games for the Seagulls, scoring 20 goals, and was also a key part of Lionel Scaloni’s World Cup-winning team in Qatar 2022.
“It’s a dream come true and I can’t wait,” said Alexis as he was presented as the new signing at Anfield.
He continues: “I wanted to be there [desde] the first day of pre-season, so it’s good that everything is ready. I’m looking forward to meeting my teammates.”
“It’s been a fantastic year for me – the World Cup, what we’ve achieved with Brighton – but now it’s time to think about Liverpool and try to be a better player and a better human being every day,” added Mac Allister.
With the arrival of the Argentine midfielder, Liverpool have started their summer spending spree as they look to replace players like James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, all of whom have left the club previously.
It is known that the Merseyside outfit were also very keen to sign Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund, but the Englishman eventually opted to join Real Madrid for a fee of £88.5 million.
Having been called up to the national team 16 times, Mac Allister was on the bench in Argentina’s defeat to Saudi Arabia before winning the World Cup. He joined Brighton from Argentinos Juniors in January 2019.
Liverpool are also interested in Chelsea’s Mason Mount, although the Englishman reportedly prefers a move to Manchester United, while the club are also monitoring Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Manu Kone and OGC Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram to revamp their own engine room.
