Warriors president Bob Myers may be leaving the team, according to reports, because the franchise has not engaged in meaningful contract extension talks with him in recent months. According to sources quoted by The Athletic’s Shams-Charania and Anthony-Slater, all sides are preparing for the possibility of Myers resigning.
Myers’ contract is about to expire on June 30, raising doubts about his future. According to The Athletic, even a competitive market offer that puts Myers at the top of the executive hierarchy may not be enough to persuade him to sign an extension. This casts doubt on the 48-year-old’s long-term dedication to the brand.
Myers, who was appointed general manager in 2012, has been instrumental in the Warriors’ success. Under his guidance, the team achieved incredible feats, including nine playoff appearances, six NBA Finals appearances and four titles. Myers is also one of 11 general managers in NBA history to win two Executive of the Year awards, in the 2014-15 and 2016-17 seasons.
Myers made important decisions that changed the Warriors’ roster and contributed to their dynasty during his tenure. Notable achievements include the hiring of coach Steve Kerr, the selection of Draymond Green, the renewal of Klay Thompson and Steph Curry’s contracts and the recruitment of Kevin Durant via free agency.
Myers’ tenure seems to be popular within the organization. Coach Steve Kerr, as well as key players Curry, Green and Thompson, expressed optimism about his return. The uncertainty surrounding Myers’ future, on the other hand, adds another layer of complication to the Warriors’ upcoming summer.
This summer, the organization is faced with several important decisions, including the likely declining of Draymond Green’s option for the 2023-24 NBA season. In addition, Klay Thompson still has a year left on his contract and there are doubts about the team’s young players, such as Jonathan-Kuminga and Jordan-Poole.
