In a much-anticipated clash at the Maracanã, Flamengo and Fluminense drew 0-0 in the first leg of the last 16 of the Copa do Brasil. The match, watched by almost 60,000 spectators, showed an intense rivalry and left the result open, setting the stage for an exciting second leg.
Undeterred by the sea of Fluminense fans that dominated the stands, Flamengo went on the attack from the first minutes, asserting their dominance over their rivals. Under the guidance of coach Jorge Sampaoli, the Reds controlled the game for most of the first half. On the other hand, Fernando Diniz’s Tricolor side took a while to settle into the game, but gradually grew into it, trying to impose their own style and possession.
Flamengo created the best chances of the first half, with Gabigol coming very close to opening the scoring in the 20th minute. After a fine delivery from Erick Pulgar, the No10 shot the ball towards goal, but the crossbar prevented it. The rebound fell to Arrascaeta, who unfortunately shot wide. Moments later, Gerson’s shot went narrowly over the bar after a tussle with the Fluminense goalkeeper.
Marcelo’s early departure due to a calf injury compounded Fluminense’s problems in the first half. The left-back was replaced by Guga in the 40th minute, and further assessments will determine the severity of the problem.
In the second half, Fluminense tried to gain control of possession, but their hopes were dashed in the 53rd minute when Felipe Melo fouled Gabigol. The red-and-black striker was released through on goal by Arrascaeta, but was cynically brought down by the tricolor defender. Referee Anderson Daronco initially showed a yellow card, but after the VAR review, changed it to a red, reducing Fluminense to ten men.
Empowered by their numerical advantage, Flamengo dictated play in the final period, pressing Fluminense relentlessly in search of a goal. However, the Tricolor defense stood firm, preventing the Reds from attacking. Goalkeeper Fábio shone with several crucial saves, ensuring that his team remained unbeaten.
With the match ending in a draw, the stage is now set for the second leg, scheduled for June 1 at the Maracanã. Flamengo will be looking to maintain their dominance and secure victory, while Fluminense will be looking to bounce back and get a positive result. The encounter promises to be an exciting clash, which will determine which team progresses in the Copa do Brasil.
