The Austrian will return to Munich at the end of his loan spell
Manchester United midfielder Marcel Sabitzer has been ruled out for the rest of the season, an official club statement has confirmed. The Austrian, who is currently at Old Trafford on loan from Bayern Munich, only arrived at the club in January, at the end of the winter transfer window. The central midfielder played 18 games for the Red Devils during his short spell and scored three goals in those games.
Sabitzer, during his time at Bayern Munich, didn’t play much in the first team, with players like Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka taking up the midfield spots in the first team. In addition, the signing of Ryan Gravenberch from Ajax only reduced Sabitzer’s chances of regular first-team football. Under Nagelsmann, it was assumed that Sabitzer would get consistent minutes after his association with RB Leipzig, but what actually happened was anything but.
Sabitzer didn’t seem to be the club’s favorite, and even Jamal Musiala moved into the central midfielder position at times. Therefore, a loan move to Manchester United proved to be the best option for all parties, as the Red Devils had just lost Christian Eriksen to a long-term injury.
On several occasions, the Austrian has expressed his happiness and hinted that he is open to a permanent transfer to Manchester. Although the loan agreement between the two teams does not include an option to buy, this could be discussed at the end of the season. Sabitzer could cost United between 30 and 40 million euros and, as Erik Ten Hag has spoken openly about the need for new midfielders at the club, the Red Devils could take a look at him.
“Everyone at the club is disappointed at the loss of Marcel’s services, as we are striving to finish our season well in the Premier League and FA Cup. Thank you for your contribution to our progress so far. We would like to wish Marcel a speedy recovery“. Manchester United said in an official statement.
