The FIA has changed the length of two of the DRS zones for next weekend’s Grand Prix of Miami. Although the locations of the three DRS zones are the same as last year, the FIA has shortened the first two activation points, increasing the distance compared to 2022.
These modifications being made by the FIA are being implemented on a track-by-track basis and are not related to the reduction of the DRS zone during the recent Azerbaijan GP. In that particular race, the DRS zone on the main straight was reduced by 100 meters. This season, the FIA has made an effort to refine the DRS zones on various race tracks. For example, during the Australian GP, four DRS zones were reintroduced.
The activation point for the first DRS zone in Miami, which was previously located 30 meters after Turn 9, on the straight to Turn 11, has now been moved to 105 meters after the turn. This change resulted in a reduction of the DRS zone by 75 meters.
Likewise, the activation point of the second DRS zone on the back straight has been moved back by 75 meters, and now starts 525 meters after turn 16, instead of 450 meters.
On the other hand, the activation points for the final DRS zone at the start of the short start/finish straight have not been changed. However, this section has little impact on overtaking opportunities.
Following the motorsport body’s decision in Baku, several drivers questioned the logic of the measure, especially after overtaking in races became quite difficult due to the extra downforce the teams were forced to add to their cars this season.
After a captivating race in Azerbaijan, the Formula 1 event will shift its focus to Miami for the second edition of the Grand Prix. This race is scheduled to take place from May 5 to 7 and will be the first of three races to be held in the United States over the course of the season.
