With less than a week to go until the 2023 NFL Draft, there are reports that the New York Jets and Green Bay Packers are resuming trade talks for veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Sources close to the matter told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport that both sides hope to reach an agreement soon.
Although a switch is not imminent, the fact that the two teams are discussing it is encouraging for fans and players alike. With the draft approaching, the Packers currently have 10 picks, while the Jets have six. It’s commonly assumed that one or both of the Jets’ draft picks could be included in any deal for Rodgers.
Rodgers spent his entire 18-year career with the Packers, earning 10 Pro Bowl selections, four AP MVP awards and playing a vital role in the Packers’ title triumph in Super Bowl XLV. He proclaimed his intention to play for New York this season in March, but there has been little news since.
The most recent flare-up in trade discussions occurred a few weeks ago, when Green Bay president Mark Murphy refused to comment on the matter, saying he couldn’t “really get into it”. Earlier this month, Jets general manager Joe Douglas took a more optimistic view of Rodgers’ position, stating that the quarterback “will be here” with New York before the start of the 2023 season.
If a deal is reached, it could take place before or during the draft, allowing both clubs time to strengthen their line-ups before the start of next season. The Jets now have the 13th overall pick, plus numbers 42 (from the Browns) and 43.
The likely trade of Aaron Rodgers is one of the most talked about issues ahead of the 2023 NFL draft. While it’s unclear what the Jets would have to offer to get Rodgers, the fact that trade talks have begun is encouraging for fans and players of both teams. If a deal is reached, it could take place before or during the draft, giving both clubs the opportunity to upgrade their teams before the start of next season.
Fans will be watching closely to see how the situation unfolds over the next few days.
