The Memphis Grizzlies face problems in their backcourt and at power forward, which they could try to solve with their No. 25 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. In addition, doubts about rehiring Dillon Brooks, an important defensive asset, could lead them to look for an athletic wing with defensive potential.
The Grizzlies’ early exit from the 2023 NBA Playoffs was partly due to a lack of quality perimeter defenders and scorers. So even if they keep Brooks, it would be wise to add several players who can contribute on both sides.
With their first-round pick, the Grizzlies have three prospects in mind for the 2023 NBA Draft.
D’Moi Hodge, a 6’10” shooting guard, could be a valuable addition for the Grizzlies with his exceptional defensive pressure and 3-point range. Despite transferring from Cleveland State to Missouri, Hodge’s numbers in the 2022-23 season were comparable to those of the previous season. His defensive prowess and anticipation make him a promising 3-and-D prospect at the next level.
Colby Jones, a 1.96m wing, started 82 of a possible 86 games and steadily improved his performance and efficiency, despite the changes in head coaches. He had his best season as a junior in 2022-23, averaging 15.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.6 blocks per game, with 50.9% shooting from the field and 37.8% from 3-point range. Jones’ deliberate pace, cunning and basketball IQ make him a skilled slasher, and his ability to make almost any pass adds to his value.
Jordan Walsh, a highly athletic forward from Arkansas, may require more development than the other candidates, but he has the tools and mindset to thrive at the next level. With a 2.21m wingspan, defensive versatility, enthusiasm and basketball IQ, Walsh has an excellent defensive side. He’s also a dangerous slasher in transition and has good shooting form, although he needs to work on his consistency beyond the arc.
