Former Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann has emerged as the favorite for the Chelsea manager’s job following Graham Potter’s recent dismissal. However, owner Todd Boehly and his team seem to be concerned about Julian Nagelsmann’s age and relative lack of experience, despite his wonderful repertoire.
Chelsea’s owners are keen to find and appoint a new manager by next week. After parting company with Graham Potter shortly after the 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, the Blues are looking for their third manager of the season.
Previously, Todd Boehly had made the decision to sack Thomas Tuchel, who led them to the UEFA Champions League title in 2021. Meanwhile, despite having the backing of the board for most of his reign, opinion quickly turned to Graham Potter just six months into his reign at Chelsea.
The former Brighton and Hove Albion manager failed to convey his philosophy and style to the London club. Of course, he hasn’t had enough time to impose his ideas and the club’s spending spree and the transfer market shenanigans in the last two windows haven’t helped either.
As a result, following their defeat to Aston Villa, the Blues have dropped to the bottom half of the Premier League table and are currently in 11th place. It is believed that a toxic atmosphere also gripped the club at Stamford Bridge amid the confusion of having so many players in the team and all these reasons led Boehly and co. to pull the trigger and sack Potter.
Potter’s deputy, Bruno Saltor, is currently in charge on an interim basis and led the team out against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday to end the tie 0-0. However, Chelsea are believed to want to appoint a new manager as early as next week and Julian Nagelsmann is leading the list of potential candidates.
Of course, Nagelsmann himself was sacked by Bayern Munich in March and has since been replaced by former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel. It has been reported that Clearlake Capital, co-owned by Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali are big admirers of the young German coach.
The situation this time is different from last time, when Boehly had his eye on Potter for a long time and ended up appointing him quickly after Tuchel’s dismissal. He already plans to give interviews and discuss the project with at least five managers and the list also includes the likes of Luis Enrique and Mauricio Pochettino.
However, according to a report in The Times, Chelsea want to appoint a new manager before they travel to Real Madrid next Wednesday to maximize their chances of winning the Champions League. The report also mentions that, although there is an urgent need to appoint a coach as soon as possible, they are also content with the idea of Bruno Saltor being in charge for the trip to the Santiago Bernabéu.
Meanwhile, Sky Sports offered a new insight into the saga by mentioning that although Nagelsmann is much admired at Chelsea HQ, there are concerns regarding the 35-year-old’s inexperience.
One of the main factors that led to Potter’s dismissal was that the players didn’t respect him and feared that history would repeat itself. However, Nagelsmann’s career has been different, as he already has experience of managing big clubs like RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich and has led them to trophies, while Chelsea was the first big club on Potter’s CV.
Chelsea are currently 11th in the Premier League table and are 12 points behind the Champions League places.
