So here we go again! Liverpool v Bournemouth, what a game, roller-coaster all the way through! And we won and that’s all that matters. Just some brief notes:
A nice tribute to Jota as it should.
Defence, got to get better. Hit on 2 counters and outnumbered for the 2 goals. VVD and Konate didn’t look as sluggish as the previous game, but we were way too exposed. Our 2 new FBs aren’t as strong defensively and, especially in the air, so will be interesting to see how this develops. But at least there is no more inverted FB and positionally they are where they need to be. For all the flake Gomez catches though, we looked more solid when he came on as RB. Alisson though, ball at feet, no gk is better.
Our midfield looked great in spurts with the work rate and talent in it. But somehow it’s too exposed for my liking when we lose the ball up front. Wirtz wasn’t as classy as the last game, but he’s always on the move looking for the ball. I’m sure he will be great once he gets used to the physicality.
Etikite, is he Firmino regenerated? His linkup play, touches and work rate. Scored a good goal by bluffing the keeper about direction of his shot, but most impressive was chasing from box to box when we were being countered near the end of the first half.
Gakpo, his willingness to help out defensively is so needed and his cutting in from the left and finishing clinically may be predictable and no one is stopping it.
Salah, with more attacking threats, they can’t really double up on him anymore so he will get more chances. Frimpong’s willingness to give width helps too. And his goal? Desire, speed, calmness and right footed. Opening day king.
Chiesa – what a well taken goal!
VAR – new season, same old. It was a handball and red card regardless if it was a full hand slap or just fingers. But MO was on the job, so I guess it’s no surprise.
Let’s get some more transfer work done, sort out the defence and we’ll be awesome this season.
